The mission's long-term success is indeterminable. Getting the Mars is more than likely biologically impossible for the human body as proven by our space station research. And.realistically this whole program and recent launch test is a publicity stunt and propaganda campaign. EVERY single scientist and politician who has spoken with the media on past few weeks have been, crying, bitching, and moaning about money. Seems suspicious too me yo

If folks want to tax churches that is fine with me. But why waste money on science fiction? The 20 years of space station experiments have found the human body cant survive without the Earth's gravity for more than a year. Even if humans could get to Mars its gravity is not strong enough humans could recuperate to survive the gauntlet of a return trip. Nothing in the Orion program is being designed to deal with this. Further if you reqd the details of the current program there aren't any plans to go to Mars at all (likely because the scientists already know an successful manned mission is likely impossible. Its a LUNAR program with quasi-realistic ambitions of asteroid exploration based on the recent success (sort of) of the Rosetta Mission in intercepting a comet based on astronomical projections.. However the former head of NASA recently said under currently approved budgets the program is doomed to failure from underfunding. He said, "with out more funding it will just end up being a waste of money." Bush II expanded funding for Mars missions and after the Recession these programs were scaled back. TLobbyists of various aerospace industry-government complex and firms pushed for a rehash of the original program and instead focus on the Moon because it was the most feasible and therefore politically more saleable. When the Recession deepened Barry O cut the funding even more saying about the Moon, "let me be blunt, we've already been there." The programs that survived were essentially pork projects for local industries and political favors. The Moon initially was only part of a multiphase plan to serve as a base for further exploration of Mars and the Asteroid belt. However several logistical issues doomed that program's potential for success including a lack of finding large enough water sources on the Moon in accessible regions to make potential fuels. The plans for developing a vehicle system were continually being bogged down by very fundamental problems. Worst of all, as with Mars itself, the Moon's gravity isn't sufficient to support human colonization which was a major component of the Mars plan to have lunar bases. There have been many very smart scientists legitimately working on plans to colonize the Moon and Mars but they've come upon some very legitimate issues that have no feasible resolution outside of science fiction. The space station experiments hoped to find ways through exercise and diet to survive long term human survival in low and no gravity and time and time again it has proven very dangerous. The human body simply needs Earth's specific gravity or our bodily systems start to fail and get out of sync.. then the current pork project version is just a pity party of science guy and manufacturers who are concerned about their job security. The space shuttle program was a,failure in economic terms, so much so that all of its missions launching satellites and even ferrying people and supplies from the space stations as a "space truck" were replaced by cheaper and older rocket based technologies for cost effective reasons. The Orion project is a motley collection of the few feasible plans left over from the Mars mission including a now more or less purposeless mission to the Moon. Its supposedly going to test and develop new delivery and vehicle systems and technologies and yet through 2033 there are no scheduled tech innovations. The major issues with the Mars vehicle system ARE NOT being tested or experimented on with Orion. So to be sure, after 20 more years nothing will be changed or gained technology wise and we would no closer to Mars than when we are right now.

No, we just wouldn't waste money on fairy tales. We went to space 40 years ago and found out that our wildest dreams are actually fantasies. Our own biology restricts us to be Earth bound and this is likely to be the case for ever. There are plenty of Earth based projects that the money could be better spent on and all those, scientists would be able to find more productive projects to work on. This isnt about me or anyone's opinions of me, its about science.

Also, the nearest star to us aside from the Sun is almost 4 light years away so its most definitely not our future. Indeed, because of the biological significance of Earth's specific gravity, Earth is OUR ONLY FUTURE,

science and engineering and exploration create value that makes everyone richer regardless of social inequalities.

e.g.- if you're hungy and borke you might not appreciate how great it's that so many people have a tricorder in their pocket these days, but that's what we have.

especially in 3rd world countries with no prior phone line infrastructure (expensive), cellular communications have allowed countries to bypass decades or even centuries of underdevelopment in telecommunications.

of course cellphones haven't soved hunger (or inequality) bt they have created economic value for countless people.

so-- making allowances for the example here-- maybe something from the space program will allow us to kill malaria. or purify water in ares where it's contaminated. or bring solar electricity to remote regions (or the creation of more & better solar powerplants). or permit agriculture in extreme conditions. or allow for less-polluting vehicles. or developments in software. or internet access for all. who knows? we need research in science and technology, and space exploration helps fund it.

i don't know exactly the meaning of the first post in this thread but i just wanted to clarify that however imperfect, space exploration is a good thing for everyone.

!@$&#! You misunderstand, im not beefing with science or unmanned space the exploration I LOVED the recent quasi-success of the Rosetta Mission. My beef in this thread has been with the Orion Program which is a waste of money and essentially a political hand out that does not and has no plans to advance science or technology. Its pork project.

the way it works is that you set a difficult goal and the science advances to catch up with it.

for example, science and technology develop ENORMOUSLY during wars. jet airplanes, computing, antibiotics, radar, rockets, night vision, all kinds of medical procedures and surgery techniques, etc-- every time there's a huge war humanity has equally big technogical leaps. yet wars aren't waged for progress.

if we're going to pay for political pork, i'd rather fund space explorations than warfare.

alright, sunday movie time, can't stay to argue right now.

But again, that is not.the Orion program, it.abandoned.the ambitious.goals and settled for a field.goal. It is NOT.trying.to develop and.tech.advances, rather.just.spending.some money on essentially.nothing.for the.next twenty uears. It.does NOT.try.to develop vehicle or delivery system advances, indeed.they.abandoned.new.vehicle designs settling on outdated Apollo era tech. It does NOT try to experiment on new fuels or propulsion system in fact its just using leftover rocket.tech from the space shuttle.

Haha even easterbrook an nfl writer agreed with me about Orion being bullshit..
Quote:
before Space News From The 1960s: Last week NASA conducted a successful unmanned flight of its new Orion space capsule, launching one into high orbit and then recovering the capsule following a water landing. Good for NASA! But there was a lot of commentary nonsense about a "new era in space flight" when last week's mission was, for intents and purposes, a reenactment of the Apollo 4 mission that occurred 47 years ago. That 1967 mission sent an unmanned version of the Apollo capsule into high orbit, bringing it back for recovery in water. The new Orion capsule and service module differs only marginally from Apollo hardware -- a little bigger, better electronics. It's nice that the Orion's first try was a success, but all the mission did was replicate something the United States could do nearly half a century hat NASA administrator Charles Bolden declared the flight to represent "a major step in meeting President Barack Obama's bold challenge, supported by Congress, that America send humans to Mars by the 2030s" shows how hopelessly out of touch NASA senior management is. There is no chance, none, zero, that Orion hardware will ever go to Mars -- orbit of the moon is likely to be Orion's operational limit. The longest Apollo mission lasted 12 days -- there's no way the slightly larger Orion could be sufficient for a 520-day Mars trip, nor does Orion have any ability to touch down on Mars and blast off again.

TMQ noted in September that a pretty basic Mars mission would weigh about 4,000 tons at departure from Earth orbit. That's about 160 times the mass of an Orion. That the NASA administrator claims Orion has anything to do with Mars flight suggests either that he lives in a dream world or is reading from a political script that, at best, is misleading.. .

So you're using an NFL writer to back up your bitching about a space programme? Good going.

You seem to think that NASA are a drain on U.S government spending when the reality is that they get 0.50% of the annual federal budget. For what they're trying to do you can hardly blame them for complaining about budget problems.

Put it this way-I'd take NASA's collective knowledge over space exploration any day.

No, im saying that Orion is so flawed that even an NFL writer noticed. He mentioned all the same points, that this project is not new or grounbreaking, that its a rehash of Apollo program, and that it will never go to Mars and instead is a political program. Do y'all even read my posts are just see the name SuchFriends and go full on Rambo attack mode! Let me repeat, i love science, I have no beef with space exploration (though I admit to having had issues in the past, but i refuse to let NASA piss on my leg while telling me its raining.
