7.5/10

Not without flaws, but I loved the music scenes and Elizabeth Banks is great.

Seen several weeks earlier:

Gone girl - 4/10

First time I don't enjoy a David Fincher film.

Full of plot inconsistencies. The first 45 minutes are soporific, the acting is just OK and the ending pretty terrible.

I'd have given Gone Girl a 6/10 myself. Same as for the new Star Wars.

I think it's definitely his schlockiest film in a long while. Played out a bit like a David Lynch directed soap opera. But I'm one of the few people who didn't go nuts for the source material. It was "meh" as far as I'm concerned.

I just thought the film was enjoyable to watch. You're right, the performances were tepid (the female cop was probably the highlight of the movie, forget her name), and the story was only good while the suspense lasted. The soundtrack added to that a lot.

I do like a David Fincher movie. But compared to Fight Club, which suited his style perfectly, or Benjamin Button, which was - oddly - one of the more emotionally poignant big budget films of the 00's, Gone Girl was just so-so. Still fun to watch things unravel, though. He definitely took a page from the Blue Velvet book of melodrama for this one, and I don't think enough people picked up on that. But whatever. Critically it was a flop compared to his last several films, most of which received butt-loads of Oscar nominations and became pop culture events.

Basic Instinct - oh yeah!!! It never gets old cause of Stone.

i have a question: who plays a better coked out asshole? Michael Douglas or James Wood? both the epitome of cokehead asshole 80's behavior. very convincing cocaine heads those two.

and Twin Peaks is not as good as I remembered.

The Revenant: Gritty, visceral and beautifully shot. Lubezki and Sakamato's work really shine in this one. The film does get a bit too pregnant with meaning every now and then though. I thought the whole Jesus-y vibe was a bit off-putting, but that might just be a petty personal gripe. The performances were great though and some of the quieter moments are really gripping. I'd say check it out.

Tom Hardy was amazing in it. And yes, I loved the music. Was the last to leave the theater because I could not pull myself away from the closing credits music. Some really cool cello work in this I thought.

Couple of docu dramas lately

Spotlight and The Big Short. Both were very good and recco'd. I had reservations about the Big Short due to not much caring for Steve Carell, but he was actually pretty good in it and overall, it was a good movie. Spotlight was EXCELLENT

The documentary "Call Me Lucky" about a never really successful stand up comic named Barry Crimmins, who I'd never heard of before, but was doing stand up in the 80's in the vein of Bill Hicks. But the documentary is more than just about his career, as it goes into a traumatic incident in his childhood as a sexual abuse victim, and how that's affected the rest of his life. The film is at times very funny, as he is very funny, but delves into some dark stuff, and certainly not everyone wants to imagine. That said, the movie is very good.

went to see Coen Bros latest, Hail Ceasar!, pretty good, has just about everything from cheesy 50's Hollywood, choreography, singing cowboys with rope tricks, crazy directors, H bombs, and Communists.

Really enjoyed this, unsettling, eerie, and a great sense of dread, and doesn't rely on cheap scares.

SPECTRE (007), which was... Well, not terrible... Not great either. I don't know how I felt about it. It was lazy, and had a ton of potential that it just wasted. Some nicely filmed scenes... specifically the "Hello James. What took you so long?" sequence.

But man. Something was off. I remember loving Casino Royale because at the time it was such a ferocious and unexpected new (old) vision of Bond, and because it played out like NOT a Bond film, but rather a really well made, well timed thriller.

Quantum of Solace... I don't remember anything from that movie. Something about sand?

Skyfall was excellent. It felt like the the "Dark Knight" to Casino's "Batman Begins." Javier Bardem was possibly the best Bond villain ever.
SPECTRE, though, was a whole lot of build up for almost no payoff. Better than Quantum, but not good enough to be the Dark Knight Rises of the series.

Unless you can't tell, I think it's quite obvious that the entire Daniel Craig Bond reboot was a pretty transparent attempt to mimic the style and success of Chris Nolan's Batman films. I used to just consider this a theory, but now that I know MGM originally went to Chris Nolan with Casino Royale and wanted him to cast Christian Bale as Bond, I think it's fact.

Apparently they tried to get Nolan to do SPECTRE when Sam Mendes was hemming and hawing about it, but Nolan was busy making the best fucking movie of the last few years, Interstellar. I think they still want him to be part of the Bond world, and here's hoping he gets on board. He's one of the only directors in the world who can reliably belt out blockbusters that are both visually stunning and intelligent.

When I heard that shit about Daniel Craig saying he'd rather slit his wrists than play Bond again, I thought, but WHY? He's the best Bond since Connery. But after watching his half assed performance in SPECTRE, I get it.

That series got a nice little reboot in 2005/6, and that made it fresh again. But that was a decade ago. It's not fresh anymore. That franchise needs a hard reset. The next Bond should definitely be either black or gay or a woman or ANYTHING other than a smooth talking Aryan sex addict.

Oh, I actually saw Deadpool after that. Yeah. I forgot. Deadpool was fun. I always have at least a little bit of fun watching comic book movies, but because I'm not big on the whole Marvel cinematic universe thing, I never have more than a "meh" reaction. Deadpool and Guardians of the Galaxy were the exception. DP was really really stupid. The Naked Gun of superhero movies. But that's what was needed. And I appreciated the ultra violence.
