THURSTON MOORE / MY CAT IS AN ALIEN - From The Earth To The Spheres Vol.1
Very Friendly
CD // £ 12.99

CD edition on Very Friendly of the ridiculously limited opax vinyl release (100 only). Thurston Moore starts things off with a 21 minute piece called “american coffin” engaging in improv piano action that recalls both dave burrell’s genius on the legendary “echo” lp on jazz actuel and textures on some of stockhausen’s wildest masterpieces. the track is fragmented by splinters of sonic feedbacks, howling guitar and every sort of musical collage inserts, all permeated by a cloud of dust and debris. My Cat is an Alien’s track is entitled “brilliance in the outer space”, - influenced by early american minimalism and the conceptual and philosophical modus operandi of avant-pioneers such as john cage and sun ra.

KEITH FULLERTON WHITMAN / THURSTON MOORE / ISOLEE / VARIOUS - Strp1 - Reactions To the Music Of Dick Raaijmakers
Basta
CD // £ 11.99

In case you don’t already know, Dutchman Dick Raaijmakers is one of electronic music’s unsung heroes. Relatively unknown outside of the Netherlands, the musician has recently enjoyed a small-scale renaissance thanks to the fantastic Basta release of early Dutch electronic music which featured tracks Raaijmakers had produced for films. This cd collects fourteen reactions by contemporary musicians to his extensive work, starting with a track from early electronic music obsessive Keith Fullerton Whitman, who takes ‘Vier Fanfares’ as his subject matter and reforms it into a rather frightening piano and organ monsterpiece – with electronic disruptions and drones eventually taking over to leave us with a tape-recorded clattering ending which will be sure to raise a smile from Mr. Raaijmakers himself. Next up is Mouse on Mars who dance it up, their squelch-laden insanity actually bearing more relation to the Dutch master’s insane vision than many of the other more obvious mixes on show. Mego co-conspiritors Zeena Parkins and Ikue Mori (Phantom Orchard) turn in another of the compilation’s highlights with a spannered slice of musique concrete – all bouncing sounds and fluctuating synth tones - of all the mixes theirs is probably the most obviously ‘early electronic’ sounding. It should come as no surprise that Thurston Moore’s mix is another key part of this bursting compilation – piping the entire source track through a chain of effects and played live like an improvised noise session. The result is a stunning piece of unrestrained Sonic Youth experimentalism and is the best reason to invest in this disc, pure class! Elsewhere, techno man-of-the-moment Isolee contributes an oddly straightforward blippy minimal/melodic techno mix which uses some of Raaijmakers’ source sounds and plonks them into a 4/4 framework – it works a treat and stands out in a beautifully peculiar way on such an experimental-based compilation. Highly Recommended.

CHRISTIAN MARCLAY / THURSTON MOORE / LEE RANALDO - F*ck sh*t Up
Victo
CD // £ 12.99

Christian Marclay, Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo - "Feedback rose and fell in heaving crescendos, drum sticks were inserted between strings, and for an hour and change, a wall of beautiful noise was erected, then smashed to bits, with no pesky backbeats or melodies to upset mesmeric abandon." Recorded at the Victoriaville Festival on 5/24/99.

DISKAHOLICS ANONYMOUS - Weapons Of Ass Destruction
Smalltown Superjazzz
CD // £ 10.99

With a set of puns that would have even The Sun blushing, Diskaholics Anonymous' new album 'Weapons Of Ass Destruction' (quiet at the back!) sees the leftfield super-group of Thurston Moore, Jim O'Rouke and Mats Gustafsson reforming for some avant/jazz/improv/punk/noise/kitchen-sink buisness. Ear-plugs, as ever, are optional... Comprised of two XXXtended tracks, the handily titled 'Weapons Of Ass Destruction Part 1 & 2' revel in their free-wheeling jazz roots; with Sweden's Gustafsson belligerently leading the charge like Albert Ayler on a Punk Rock sugar-rush. As Thurston's guitars slam you against the wall (think Sonic Youth circa 'Confusion Is Sex/Bad Moon Rising') and O'Rourke's laptop slices through the bellicose aural fog, it all gets rather emotional - engendering images of epic skylines and scarred skies. Certainly not for the faint-hearted, 'Weapons Of Ass Destruction' (it somehow gets unfunnier the more you hear it...) is the kind of fiercly experimental music that is always admirable, but not always an easy listen. But if you wanted that, you'd be buying James Blunt. Insert your own pun here...
