While I'd say LOTS of countries are more concerned with their pop idols than politics, Americans are easily the most embarassing about it.

in America pop culture has replaced the mythological/religious culture of the Old World..

people used to be into saints, martyrs and holy men, from Spain to China, Turkey to India.. but in America today the pilgrimages, the devotion, the gossip is not about religious personages, but pop culture. The term 'idol' is more literal than figurative..
