BLACK PUS (Lightning Bolt, USA, Thrill Jockey)

Black Pus is Brian Chippendale, who rose to prominence as the drummer of noise rock titans Lightning Bolt and Mindflayer. The first Black Pus CD-R was self released in early 2006, and was a collection of ferocious free jazz, multi-tracked on Chippendale’s cassette four-track. Over the course of the past several years Chippendale has been hand-picked by Björk and The Flaming Lips as a collaborator, and recruited by Andrew W.K. for Lee “Scratch” Perry’s 2008 album Repentance.

DAN FRIEL (USA, Thrill Jockey)
Armed with an arsenal of thriftstore pedals and noisemakers splayed across his lap, Dan Friel has spent the last decade home brewing electronic music that is equal parts ragged, punk, psychedelic and glorious. Following the recent Valedictorian /Exoskeleton EP, which was called “a giddy, abrasive gem” by Under The Radar and “bottled raw power” by the BBC, Total Folklore retains the melodic prowess of Friel’s previous work while harnessing considerable rhythmic power to back it up. In a preview of the LP after his sold out show with Black Dice in London, No Ripcord said it was “an experimental record to savour and further confirm Dan Friel as one of the most exciting musical witchdoctors around.”

THAT FUCKING TANK (UK, Gringo Records)
Andy plays a specially tuned baritone guitar through guitar and bass amplifiers, James plays a minimal drum kit. Their novel name, energetic performances and manish volume saw them play all over Europe and the UK with brain-mangling regularity, sharing stages and tours with bands including Hella, Q and not U, Lungfish, Oxes, Unsane, Kid Commando, GI Joe, Chevreuil, Grabba Grabba Tape, Poltergroom, US Maple, Neptune, Whitehouse, AIDS Wolf, Vialka, Nervous Kid, Don Caballero, The Fucking Champs, Hoover and the like.
This period of the band birthed the Document of the First Set e.p (2004) and Day of Death by Bono Adrenalin Shock (2006) both released by Jealous Records.
Relentless touring, emigration from LS6 area of Leeds and growing responsibilities outside of music saw the duo playing gigs at a more regular pace in 2007. In 2008 That Fucking Tank fulfilled a teenage fantasy by playing on a bill with Metallica at Leeds and Reading Festivals.
