this is a band that i love, and one that i think is extremly underrated as far as musicality goes. they have made some unbelievable records. out of all the 70s rock bands, BOC definitley has this strange and austere poetic thing about them (i mean, cmon, their biggest hit is about joint suicide). i mean, sandy pearlman and richard fuckin' meltzer(!) provided poetry for the lyrics. i would think a lot of people think of them as corny, which is probably true when waling about them post-1982, but everything before that is pure gold. i would mention my favorite records by them, but when it comes to BOC i tend to just compile my favorite songs by them and listen to them together (well just for kicks thier "s/t" is my fave.), so here are my favorite songs by them:

transmaniacon mc
screams
redeemed
sinful love
this aint the summer of love
dont fear the reaper
tatoo vampire
i am the storm
the subhuman
maserati GT (I aint got you) (live version only)
golden age of leather
goin through the motions
shes as beautiful as a foot
od on life itself (is that a great fucking title or what?!?!)
7 screaming diz busters
mistress of the salmon salt (quicktime girl)
nosferatu
workshop of the telescopes
stairway to the stars
fireworks (cant decide which one i like better, BOC or animal collective)
career of evil
the great sun jester
lonely teardrops
dominance and submission

i also nominate them as having the greatest songtitles of all time (sorry anal cunt)

so, this band deserves a thread. if anyone like blue oyster cult (secretly or otherwise), please post here)

one hit wonder? they started in 1970, got thier first massive hit in the mid 70's, and are still playing today. how the fuck does that constitute as one hit wonder? thats the guy of hipster minded accusations i cant stand. blue oyster cult is every bit as important as something like, i duno, pavement.

Everyone can't know everything dear. Blue Oyster Cult [+ superfluous diaresis] haven't had many hits and aren't foremost in the popular consciousness. Are you going to be a prick every time someone doesn't know something that you do?

nay, they are more important than pavement.

the first 5 records are unassailable. even the stalk-forrest stuff is worth hearing.

buck dharma is easily one of the best guitarists every to sling an SG over his shoulder.

Shit yeah, pick up the ETI Revisted compilation on Munster Records if you ever see it. Burnin For You is one of my most played songs at the moment.

I came across them when I was selling somebodys record collection years ago and I really liked the s/t lp cover. So listened to it, really liked it and didn't sell it. I only know that album and fear the reaper so maybe I should get more.

just make sure you stick to the 70s output, beyond that is when the stadium chessiness really becomes a factor in the tunes.

i love that lp with passion as well. as far as "the greatest live album" ever released, i always say mc5's "kick out the jams" because its the best album by one of the fpur most important and original/influential punk/underground bands (the others being the stooges, the velvets, and beefheart) and its live. to me, "kick out the jams", "fun house", "trout mask", and "white light white heat" are absolutley indispensable for any fan of underground or unusual music.

Cool, a BOC thread. I think alot of their stuff was cheeze, even in the seventies. But i love their whole dark mysterious vibe they had..all their cool looking album covers et. Fire of Unknown Origin wasn't bad either, that was 81'. And beleive it or not, Club Ninja had a few good tracks on it too. That was like late 80s or something. Reaper may be one of my favorite radio songs when i hear that unexpectedly. Still awesome.

yeah, i mean, a couple songs, "godzilla" for example, seems to have been made solely to squeeze some cash out of it. but they certainly had much higher artistic aspirations than your average prog arena band from the 70s. and their lyrics are actual poetry, which is always nice. and they always have the most beautifuly haunting melodies, while still rocking it up big time. they rule (d).
