You know DR, I thought about doing this survey too, but I was going to do it with "songs". It was a good idea to limit it to one genre.

1. A Punk song that defines the genre: "Too Drunk To Fuck"

2. A Punk band that defines the genre: I want to say something more original than the Sex Pistols, but they are in fact the answer to the question.

3. The ultimate Punk band lineup (Vox/Lead/Rhythm/Bass/Drums): Rocket fromt the Tombs, first generation. Any supergroup would likely stop being punk as The Lords of the New Church easily prove. I actually like the Lords a lot, but they weren't punk.

4. One Punk album you would want on a desert island: Confusion is Sex (it's Sonic Youth's most "punk" album)

5. One Punk song that makes you dance: "Lobotomy" by the Ramones

6. One Punk song that makes you think: "Margin Walker" by Fugazi

7. A band that should be thought of as Punk, but rarely are: Public Enemy

8. A band that shouldn't be thought of as Punk, but regularly are: The Offspring

9. British or American: American

10. Sonic Youth's most Punk Rock song (no covers): "World Looks Red"

i thought I would just put my top seven tunes up here...

1) subhumans - I dont wanna die
2) casualties - no rules (best intro ever)
3) a global threat - out in the dark
4) Civil Disobedience - Manufactured Citizen (who else has tripple snare rolls?)
5) Allergic to Whores - Exit (similarly fast drumwork as civil disobedience)
6) Aus Rotten - Fuck Nazi Sympathy (obvious reasons, if the music was half as good as the lyrics it would have made it to the top five)
7) The Varukers - All Systems Fail (90s version with more speed and edge)

I was just about to say I mostly agree with Mr 2600. I'm not sure of his thinking, but for my part The Pistols represent a great deal of what punk is about, and what it's become. They've inspired a great many 'properly' 'anarchist' bands (I use these terms very loosely) such as your Crasses or your Napalm Deaths whilst also inspiring the 'fake' 'corporate whores' such as your Blinks or Green Days. They represent, to many, a moment of rebellion, an exciting pop-cultural moment of breaking with the past; to miserly (but not yet old) cunts such as me they sound like a better version of the Faces. There's a huge pop element to the Pistols (like, uh, choruses - remember them?) but they're still an important yardstick/ reference point, even if negatively, for the majority of 'punk' bands.

I'll happily undermine any salient points here by saying that I don't really like punk, unless Avril Lavigne counts.

Can't be bothered to do the actual list, but I'd take British at a fairly large push.

SuchFriends, Lydon told McClaren to go fuck himself and the band lasted for one fucking album, and it's "corporate?"

That's not to say that I don't get your meaning, well, I sort of get it.

demonrail:
Talking Heads are wonderful. They surely do have a "punk attitude." Of course, they are usually thought of as New Wave or New Wave Punk, owing to the presence of Harrision on the synthesizer at times, Byrne's rather unorthodox songwriting content and vocals, and all the polyrhythms and funk elements. They eventually, as you know, became poppier.

LifeDistortion:
I'll never forget the time that Toilet & Bowels attempted a character assasination upon myself for merely posting the lyrics to Blondie's "Rapture" in one of the many, many threads about Sonic Youth's "Do You Believe in Rapture?" And all I was doing was bumping a long-forgotten-about thread with those song lyrics because I had just heard the Blondie song. He wished to peg me as "soft" or "corporate" and call me out for even mentioning Blondie, like it was some unpardonable act. I mean, he could have written, "you sure are bored, and by the way, I think Blondie suck," and that would have been fine, but instead, he made it into this whole thing about how I had no credibility at all. And he kept on & on with it to bump the thread because, I suppose, he wanted everyone to see him "exposing me" as an "unhip" Blondie fan.
Kim is a well-known Debbie Harry fan, and whatever, I like some of Blondie's early music. Oh well, what can you do? A certain amount of people are gonna be unmitigated dickheads; unfortunately, such is life.
