haven't heard it, but quotsa are yet to do something as magnificent as "demon cleaner" and i doubt they will ever do.

i've said it once, i'll say it again.

I didn't like that one either. It had a few good numbers but it was a bit ... too much of a messy thingie for me I guess? New one sounds more focused. Robot rock feel to it that kinda urges me to shake my head.

That's good.

okay, finally heard this today.

had some surprisingly good parts, reeeeeeeally weird parts too, but man.. i'll be damned if most of it didn't do anything for me.

just like every other qotsa album: i'm glad it exists, but i'm not going to go out of my way to listen to it.

qotsa seem to have a big problem in the songwriting department. josh seems to want to do waaaaaaaaaaaay too much. that's why i prefer the self-titled album.. it has a few eccentric parts, but it doesn't have 700 instruments piled on top of a fucking midtempo stoner jam. i think that's what made songs for the deaf their last good album: it had just straight-up guitar jams on it, which is what qotsa excel at. when they pile on 50 keyboards, theramines, bongos, and all that bullshit, it just doesn't sound .. it just doesn't sound good when they could just be playing balls-out rock, which is what everyone wants. lullabies had waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much of this bullshit instead of piling on the rock. this one seems to have a bit less, and the parts with way too much going on are all distorted and muddy to give the appearance of them rocking out. but yeah.

i also noticed that all the singles qotsa release are pretty just straight-up rock oriented. nothing too weird for thier singles. then you get their album and there's drum machines and 70 tracks of a guitar going "wickle wickle wahhhhhhhh".

they're just a pretty boring band, which is sad, because i really really want to like them.

lullabies was shit. this isnt. i had a prerelease thread on this album a few weeks back. i really really like it a lot! the trent reznor influence is a bit obvious but track 1 is a killer.

hey adam, glad to see you tried it out!qotsa will never evr make another rated r to.

to me, especially on tracks like TURNIN' ON THE SCREW or MISFIT LOVE, the influence you can hear the most is quite frankly KING CRIMSON. the riffs almost seem to come out of RED... 1974. and the way guitars intertwine... with the vocals of the opening track especially. some THREE OF A PERFECT PAIR feel... dunno.

but I dig this.

Era Vulgaris has more in common with "Rated R" than probably anything else in their cataloge. I had expected Lullabies 2, due to much of the same personel; but I was pleasently suprised with what wasn't there. The arrangements are bizzare enough to make you not catch their individual nuances on the first coupla listens, yet each song slips in to the old friendly J-Ho groove, doing what they do best- subtle-artsy-boogie-rawk with pop sensibilities. I don't think it should be taken too seriously, like SFTD & LTP, but it can't help but creep out my subconscience when I listen to it. It's not QOTSA's finest moment, but it ain't no "High 'n Dry" either.
