From an article by Olga Enger entitled: "Organizers Working to Defuse Racial Tensions" in Newport This Week (Vol. 44, No. 49, December 1, 2016):
"Last week, Newport resident Jackie Mertzig encountered a delay at the self-checkout at the Stop & Shop on JT Connell Highway.
""Oh, you [explitive] niggers," said an older white man, growing impatient in line. Shocked, she ignored the comment and tried to find an employee to help with the transaction.
""Get your Puerto Rican spic ass back to your country," he yelled at Mertzig, who is not Hispanic. When a nearby black female asked if there was a problem, he spat back at her, "All you niggers stick together."
"The man left his groceries and went out the door, continuing to mumble racial slurs as he went outside."
"Mertzig had never experienced such explicit racism on the island in the past, so she had no doubt the presidential campaign has emboldened such behavior.
""It's absolutely the Trump campaign. We never heard of this happening before in Newport, but all of a sudden it's everywhere", Mertzig said."
Now, am I the only one on this MB who recognizes the man's behavior as an early symptom of Alzheimer's? i've seen it over and over again, the last time on a bus (prior to the election) when an elderly black woman who couldn't remember which stop to get off at began berating some Hispanic men, saying: "Next time you'd better be speaking English, because I was monitoring you!".
