I tried playing stand up bass before, it isn't as hard as you think. You should do it!

Probably 500+ unless you are lucky. Good ones are 1500+. You could always make a washtub bass and mic it. That would be awesome.

I dunno, maybe when I get a job I'll rent a stand up bass, then if I really like it I'll save up and buy one

Those things are crazy expensive. I'd like to try it because it sounds fun, but in reality I don't think it's worth the money to actually go through with. Gotta be really serious about it.

But I guess guitars and drums are just as expensive, so I'm being completely irrational here.

Well, guitars don't have to be as expensive, but if you have 2 or 3 good gigging guitars, a good gigging amp, and gigging effects, it adds up.
