I think just going out to dinner is a date. It doesn't have to be called a date, it's just a planning outing with or without people. I've been on a few "formal" dates, but most of those were an easy way of saying "I like you".

I was walking behind this emo couple today. they had their arms around each other. The problem was that he was a good foot taller than her. I couldn't help thinking how uncomfortable they looked. It was very cute though.
