Just picked up a cd entitled live trek 1985-1986 out of the bargain bin the other day after seeing them mentioned on this forum (alt tunings thread). Before purchasing I took out the inlay and saw that they were supported by Live Skull for some of the dates so that sealed the deal....

Any recommendations on what to check out next from em ???

I also found a nice Anthony Milton cd in the bin that same trip which made it a pretty worthwhile trip for me....

Yes, "Tragic Figures" is the most essential. All of their albums are good, but the first one is still the best.

I saw them play one of their first reunited shows a few months ago, and they were admittedly a little rusty, but I still look forward to see what they may do next. Mission of Burma took a little while back together to completely hit their stride, and now they're fucking unstoppable.

'Tragic Figures' is a fine record.I've been re-listening to 'Customs' recently and it is still as good as when i first heard it.

The band that took tribal percussion the furthest in rock was Savage Republic, who blended it with surf guitar and Arabian scales and album packaging that looked third world currency. Before a gig, like Einstruzende Neubaten, they'd gather some junk from the area around the club, and use it for drumming. I saw them twice, both times completely mesmerizing. They still perform sporadically. This track is from the final performance of their 1989 incarnation.

I learned about Flux and Savage Republic from a guy who went on to form a band influenced by both; Washington DC's long-running instrumental band Tone. They don't tour- some versions Tone have had five or more guitarists. That electric guitar orchestra sound is represented nicely on their latest album:

Now that Stomp has come and gone, underground bands might be able to wring something new out making a racket with percussion. Liars have been drifting in that direction. But the spectacle of pouding on rusty urban detritus should get recycled.

hung out with F-Space when I was touring with Jarboe in early 2006, very nice guys!

Only SR I've heard is on the fantastic Sub Pop 100 album ("Real Men") but I hear they have a new album coming out on Neurot.

Last I was there the Mobilization.com site also had a 45minute interview with T.Moore, lots of great stuff on that site, check it!

Savage Republic was the first band I ever saw play live when I was 14. It was such an awesome show, beginning with the surreal-ness of the setting...the backyard of a farmhouse in the boonies west of Davis, next to a swimming pool and halfway into a crop-circle cut at the edge of a mature cornfield. The torches they had lit had me worried the whole place would go up in flames, but it was a perfect night.

I also met band members, and it was quite a thing for me because it was so easy, and all I had ever known was hearing them on the radio as a kid, and I had no idea that any musicians needn't be treated like big stars. I remember being really embarrassed at first, but later feeling that people were kinda making a bigger deal of me being 14 and this being my first show experience than I was about Savage Republic.

It all came full-circle for me when Savage Republic played my living room about a year and a half back. They were outstanding.

They will be touring this summer in support of a new record.

And "Tragic Figures" is considered by most to be the must-have album.

But "Live Trek" is a pretty great cross-section of all their stuff, and it makes a natural bridge to "Jamahiriya."

Scenic, Bruce's mellower, more instrumental side project is excellent too.

Here is a link to two un-released takes from the "1938" recordings. The version of "Anemone" may end up on a magazine compilation in Belgium. (Stay tuned) As for the other piece, "Bari", it was simply an acoustic jam that felt really natural. The cello was still in the "feeling out" stages, and we ran out of time to finish it and put it on the record. Some odd notes aside, I thought that folks may be interested in hearing it. It consisted of acoustic guitar, irish bouzouki, cello, and Alan doing some amazing hand drumming.

I'm kind of shocked, because you usually seem to be more up on everything imagineable than I'm ever able to be. They are certainly completely up your alley, and one of the classic post-punk groups of all time.

they released a new album late last year on neurot and it always slips my mind to check it out.

and appearantly they are touring now.

They toured Italy extensively.
