Agree 100%.

I LOVED this. I thought it was superior to Get Out in almost every way, honestly.

Also, what a brilliant use of “I got 5 on it” ... haunting

The whole thing is just a goddamn masterpiece. Peele is batting a thousand.

Remember when people thought M. Night was going to be the next Hitchcock?

Well... ahem...

Oh I thought you were responding to my saying I saw Endgame and it was fun.

Like, a million times better than Aquaman, which felt like a Jean claude Van Damme movie.

Anyway, yes, shit’s silly but so is Star Wars. So is fantasy. So is horror. It can all be done well is what I’m getting at. Meh

Don't think my reaction when watching that film was to laugh at any point! Think that film highlighted how solid of an actress Taylor was. Great film.

i don’t know... the mindfuck upon mindfuck upon mindfuck gets to be hilarious once you see the whole picture, once you get the whole game. for me, anyway.

i mean... i don’t want to spoil this six decades after the fact, but the way the fuck with those two kids... haaaahaaaahaaaaa.

and so many great lines.

it’s like strindberg’s dance of death, but way funnier.

star wars sucks (yes i said it) and van damme is for lols.

none of those are adult movies. i fucking miss adult movies. and i don’t mean porno (the new meaning of “adult”).

when i grew up my parents went to see a megamillion films that children weren’t allowed in and made, you know, art history.

now, i put on a hal hartley dvd last night (had to stop, could not watch, was busy) but the first thing that popped into my mind was—where the fuck did hal hartley go?

i haven’t looked him up but last i saw his name he was directing an episode of red oaks.

oh, yes!—adult movies went to tv

so there are no more adult movies (ok, there are, just very few) outside of documentaries

and movies now are mostly either shit hallmark movies with inspirational messages, or mega-budget blockbusters with family appeal

i want more adult movies that won’t become theme parks. i like the thighs of gal gadot as much as anybody but cmon. enuff.

where is the who’s afraid of virginia woolf in 2019? where is the godfather? where is sex lies and videotape, even? oh, soderbergh also doing tv now.

ps- watch the documentary “seduced and abandoned” for a first-hand look at the current economics of the business. this shit isn’t something i made up to torment you. it’s just the way hollywood has evolved.

pps- i just found out about soderbergh’s “logan lucky” which he made without any studio interference. good for him. but **first time i hear about it**.

It's insane to think that the Godfather was the biggest film of 1972, and one of the biggest of that decade. Swear if that film came out now it'd be a niche film with mild success. Which is just too depressing to think of.

for the past 10 years, if a film cannot be dubbed into mandarin and cannot be easily visually understood by a non-American, then the film does not get pushed.

well, that perhaps reincarnated into the sopranos. so not all is lost.

but yeah, a movie like that today? a story like that, in that format?

or, say, today’s “dog day afternoon.” or its sequel, “do the right thing” where do i find them?

To be fair, those movies are still being made. They’re just not being made on a massive scale.

Also, I don’t care if you think X and Y movies are for adults. I’m an adult and I’ve been one for a bit. I watched Endgame and enjoyed it and I’ll watch it again probably.

Just the whole “for adults” take sounds pretty condescending, but whatever. I know what you mean and you’re right about trends at the industry level. Oh well.

right. those “grownup” quality movies are not in your regular everytown box office anymore. you have to go watch them in tribeca or whatever.

i enjoy kids movies and overgrown teenage movies just like anybody else. there’s a place for them in life. pass the popcorn. pew-pew-pew... BOOOM.

but my complaint is not about those movies in themselves. it’s about their ubiquity, and a lack of the other at the box office. those others are now practically absent from the culture at large.

except on tv—those stories are on tv now, more or less.

maybe there’s a better word for them but i have to call them like i see them. yes, adults can watch and even love kid’s movies (miyazaki hi...), but i’m talking about... you know the kind of movie i’m asking for, yes? give me a better label and i might adopt it. “adult, not porno”.

the last time the coen bros. were big at the box office was... no country for old men? over a decade ago. which showed in every town and everyone talked about it.

and fargo, fargo was huge in its day. remember?

then fargo moved to tv

last year i was raving about ladybird. and it’s more of a movie about teenagers but it requires a grownup comprehension plus some sort of sensibility from the audience. and it was great to have it around— but it was also almost a rare occurrence.

"for adults" means that the film is dealing with adult themes, things which children, or teens would not normally give a fuck about.

I would have HATED Virginia Wolf if I had seen it at age 17.

it requires adult experiences and wisdom to fully understand and appreciate.

I don't know where you live so I don't know if you have arthouse theaters accessible to you. I believe if you keep up with what's coming out, watch trailers for movies online and such, you'll find that the mature films you seek are out there. I'm not sure its fair to compare today's fair in mature movies to movies of the 70's necessarily. I would argue much of A24's output are just the kind of movies you're talking about. Movies that take chances and aren't just trying to make "popcorn"(for lack of a better word)movies. This year alone I've seen "Climax" and "Midsommar" which you can't say were movies made for immature audiences. Far from it. There's a movie out right now called The Nightingale which sounds interesting. Of course a Climax or The Nightingale isn't going to get the same media coverage as a Marvel movie or a Fast and the Furious movie. But the internet allows you to see the trailers for these movies and at least be aware that they exist, so even if you miss the often way too small window that these movies play in, there is always catching it on iTunes or some other platform.

great movie, but for me it wouldn't have to be so bloody bloody filled with blood It would still have been a great movie if there was less blood in it.

This can be streamed on Youtube. With Indonesian subtitles, so you can learn a new language for free!
And there's also this:
The Secret Life Of Brian: Documentary on the Monty Python film about the making of the movie, and especially about the controversy that the movie caused by religious fanatics when it was released back in 1979. The debate that is featured in that documentary can be also seen completely here.
And Monty Python's the Life of Brian deleted scenes. Most of them are not really missed though, but in the documentary some of them are mentioned, especially the one scene that got cut about a nazi type called Otto.

no idea about those movies you’re talking about, and pretty sure it’s the first time i hear about them—even here, i believe? i know you’re saying “the internet” but this is the internet.

of course i’ll go look for them now... thanks for the mention, please keep them coming.

as for where i live... well... there’s been that hurdle the past few years. but my location does not influence industry trends,

please note though, these great movies of the past we’re talking about were not “arthouse”. they were mainstream. they showed everywhere.

taxi driver, godfather, deer hunter, apocalypse now, rosemary’s baby, etc etc, were big budget movies made with hollywood stars. elephant man, hannah and her sisters, ran, scarface, raging bull, brazil, etc... not arthouse, seen everywhere.

same with the 90s... barton fink, pulp fiction, my own private idaho, swingers, casino, various oliver stone projects, a whole multitide of other “serious” or adult-themed films... not arthouse

i remember seeing the talented mr ripley in some ohio suburb multiplex.

these opportunities for audiences are few and far between now.

check out “seduced and abandoned”, where alec baldwin and james toback (featuring bernardo bertolucci as an example from the past) try to put together a film for mature audiences in 2013. they show that basically at that time you either had a mega-budget or you had a small movie under 5 million. a movie for say 25 or 30 million bucks... very hard to put together.

i think those trends have only exacerbated since then. it’s easier to get a billion dollars than it is to get 50 million.

eta: i checked out those movies! they’re european. different financing/production than the hollywood studios... but yeah luckily there’s still europe.

finally last night had a chance to rewatch hal hartley’s THE UNBELIEVABLE TRUTH (i own that dvd and keep it in this cabin actually).

great movie, like all hal hartley ones, but the funniest thing was seeing edie falco playing a waitress circa 1989.

she’s good too but i wouldn’t had known her (from eve?) the first time i saw this

wife and I rewatched Hateful eight (directors cut) the other month. I "enjoyed" it more the second time, when I took the details in. Crazy flick.
