SY needs to book some pacific NW daydream nation shows which do NOT conflict w/ What The Heck fest in Anacortes, WA (which hasn't actually been anounced yet but probably will be soon, w/ dates surrounding and including 07/21/2007) 'cuz i want to go to both, and i can't travel at the speed of light (yet). should i buy tix for LA on the 20th? i dunno!? arrghh! i think the olympia experimental music fest is around then as well, maybe a little earlier...

The 13th Annual Olympia Experimental Music Festival is June 21st - 24th. I booked the acts for the Saturday 6/23 show (I actually started the festival in 1995). This of course has nothing to do with Sonic Youth, however, just answering your query.

I believe the hype died quite a while ago now. It really was a great place to live before all that bullshit hit. Portland now reminds me of Seattle in the late '80s, which is to say I like it a lot. I probably shouldn't be posting that on the internet though...

music scene in Portland? unless it started in mid '04 when I left, I am not sure I would agree.
I would agree that Portland is a better place than Seattle. Will be nice to see both again in a week and a half

I live in Portland, I play in a band in Portland, and I do a radio show in Portland, and I can't for the life of me think of it as a "music scene" city. (I think you were kidding calling 3 years ago "the olden days", right?)

There are great musicians here to be sure, and from what I've seen they are relatively supportive of each other. However, a "scene" to me implies there is a "sound" or at least a core of places where many of the same musicians and fans gather, and Portland for better or worse (I personally think better) doesn't have either of those. Sure there are tons of indie pop bands and experimental groups, but it is nothing like Seattle was in 1988 when you saw the same faces at every show and the bands majorly influenced each other to create an undeniable regional sound (which didn't even start to suck until the mid '90s.)

I don't think those kind of regional "scenes" can really exist much anymore when we live in a world where anyone can create pretty decent lo-fi recordings in their own home without needing a studio, and can distribute them all over the world at virtually no costs without needing a record label. Similarly, such artists, are influenced by people all over the planet more easily than they are by bands they play with on occasion in clubs. So the whole world is a "scene", and I personally think this is a good thing.

i have only passed through seattle and cannot weigh in on it, but having spent time in portland i can say i like it a lot. i was just thinking of a convenient drive if i was attending the afforementioned festival. potland would work too if the dates were right. SY should plan their tour around my personal schedule, right? oh man...
