Hey, just saw a place to bury strangers last night.

My band isnt loud enough.

I know he builds his own shit, and Im no gear head...

Im not trying to get THAT loud (they blew the power 4 times during their set at MPMF) haha but I would like to get louder without adding any other members.

What are some relatively cheap/solid pedals that you guys know of?

FOr guitar and bass.

I would like to get the bass alittle fuzzier but everything me and my bassist messed around with just makes it sound fuzzy but thinner, shitty...like MUSE.

Right now I use a strat thru a fender bassman amp with a reverb pedal and bad monkey overdrive.

He plays a musicman bass thru some big cab, I forget what kind.

anyways...

SUGGESTIONS please?!

I haven't listened to your band in a while, and am not completely sure as to what sort of sound you are wanting to go for...but...those Rat distortion pedals are pretty nice. I've used one a few times...nice big, gross, distorted sound.

.... add another guitar amp to accompany the Bassman. Play through an ABY switch "Y" so you can run 1 guitar signal to both amps. Also use an Electro Harmonix POG and apply subtle octave shifts or harmonics... either through the complete signal or on just one of the amps. Either one of these methods would improve or even better, both.

Stick with the Fender tone, but consider a Twin Reverb. Bassmans are only 50 watts and not near as loud as an 85-100 watt Twin. You can't get your amp louder than when it is loud, it will only break up more.... and in regards to a Bassman, this means more muddy.

The Twin Reverbs 2x12s will sound fucking great with the bassmans 4x10s.... I know this from experience and always play through paired combo's like that. You might like the Twin more in fact, but they aren't favored for breaking up like you're getting with the Bassman.... it will require pedals. With two amps, you can push / vary EQ's to accent each other (like the bassman bright w/ more drive and the twin thick and full - to thicken up your sound).

You can find used Twin Reverbs in the $700 range (give or take) all day, vintage or Reissues (craigslist).

The ultimate solution for the bass would be a Zvex Woolly Mammoth (fuzz), but not cheap. My favorite of all fuzz's (for guitar or bass). It's designed for bass and is acclaimed for not "thinning" out the sound.... in fact I think they thicken it up while adding fuzz. Sadly, I don't have one. I'm always looking for one used and cheap but it just doesn't happen.

Unfortunately I don't have many "cheap" solutions, but if you're willing to buy used...? The POG, especially the micro POG would be a cheap upgrade for starters.

... all said though, isn't the limits of your "loudness" live based on the venues PA?

Pretty much agree with this post, i have an early 70's silverface twin reverb and its really loud and clear sounding even though it needs some work (i.e. re-biasing and capacitors replaced) its 75 watts but its been modded (the vibrato pre-amp was rewired for more gain) for increased gain, which is ridiculusly unnecessary for me and most situations, when i was in a band i was easily louder than anyone else, never cranked it above 3 or 4 master volume-wise when i approached volume of 4 soundmen wouldn't be too happy because they would tell me after my set that they would eventually turn the PA mic off from my amp, as I was too loud.

would love to get a ZVex Wooly Mammoth, was really considering one but they are over $300!, now I occasionallyy use a ZVex Fuzz Factory it has a huge amount of gain on tap but can be thin sound-side and have had trouble with the feedback from it, currently use an older ProCo Rat (late 80's) and a cloned Big Muff (w/ increase volume/mids)... also instead of the ProCo Rat i'll use a Fulltone OCD (obsessive compulsive drive) or a ZVex Box of Rock (which also has a booster circuit) as both of these have much more gain on tap than my Rat...

one thing i might suggest considering if you don't want to get a new amp and make your current amp louder is try using a Booster (i.e. Electro Harmonix Linear Power Booster, LPB-1) it will increase sustain and your volume by at least 3X, making you sound bigger with abit more mids (LPB's tend to emphasize mids) but it may add some distortion and push the tubes to overdrive in a pleasant or unpleasant way.

Hell yeah to the last two posts. That's the kind of advice I was looking for.

I've had that suggested to me before, how would I combine the two amps together? I've never done that.

I have a fender stage 112 amp combo. It's not in the same caliber as the higher end fender amps and its not tube but it's pretty loud. I have an extra amp for it so basically it's a 2x12.

There are plugs in the back of it though. There are no plugs in the back of the bassman.

(sorry I'm not a gear head)

that electroharmonix booster sounds like it might be cool for the bass, im gonna go look.

I dont really like any of the fuzz pedals im hearing for bass, even the zvex one. They all make it sound too distorted with too much sustain. I just want a subtle boost to the bass, to make it louder and alittle dirtier but not so crazy. I want it to still sound like the same bass for the most part.

We are only a 3 piece and are trying to mix old sounds with new sounds....

this:
http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/p...her?sku=150757

One guitar signal plugs into it, say from your pedals.... then you have two instrument lines running out of the pedal right into the amp inputs. Nothing fancy on the back of amps or anything (that refers to using ones amp to power another cab or speaker).... you're just doubling your guitar signal. You can select either line to either amp, or both. That's why they call it an A,B,Y... the Y represents the signal splitting off.

and this:
http://www.sadowsky.com/accessories/preamp.html

.... but you can't really push the amps beyond what they are capable of. If you are cranking up the bass amp to near distorted volumes.... pedals are only going to make this result happen sooner as you boost the signal. It might just be time to up the wattage and cab sizes. If you like the other bands sound, why not just steal their gear?

Catalinbread SFT , insanely versatile, you can boost, fuzz, destroy signals both for bass and guitar with this. And the output is powerful, keep the gain knob low ha ha, and it's pick sensitive too, you can play gently and the sound comes out clean, you pick hard and it start distorting, kinda valve like..

If you are looking for just adding volume and sustain with out too much distortion/fuzz/drive, best to go with a booster type of pedal and stay away from more traditional distortion/fuzz/overdrive pedals...

i know a few bass players that use the LPB-1 and love 'em, there are a number of other boosters on the market that could be better but are more expensive (i.e. Catalinbread SFT, ZVex Super Hard On (SHO)...etc...) if you are handy at all with electronics you can make a EH LPB-1 to the original specs (circa 1969) for less than $25, i have made several for me and friends... the now made LPB-1 is still relatively inexpensive, i think they are about $40...

on the 2 amp setup you can do several things, you can find a pedal that has stereo outputs to use in your setup and have it last in your chain. each output to each amp i had done that in the past with a Digitech PDS-1002, Deluxe Memory Man, and a Line6 DL4 all have 2 output jacks... or you can easily make an enclosure with one input and two outputs, i have done this too, and have included volume pots for each output for extra control. you can also just buy a y-adapter type of cable to plug into your last pedal in the chain and each output goes to a seperate amp. be abit careful though, i once got a nice shock running my guitar setup to two sperate amps, i think it may have something more to do with the grounding, it is important that you plug both amps to the same power supply
