Music for a wedding

I'm trying to get music together for a friend's wedding, and I don't know what to get together. I normally would just put a bunch of funk and stuff cause usually you can't go wrong with that, but it just wouldn't flow here. Any suggestions?

like "I Only Have Eyes for You" and "Whip It" and "Thriller"

Seriously. You can't go wrong with as many slow doo-wop songs as possible, 80's new wave, and michael jackson. Throw in some rap there too. Think Outkast style rap, or Sugarhill Gang. Family friendly.

Hate the dude with every inch of my being, but he's a fucking HIT at weddings. This is what it sounds like when doves cry... AT WEDDINGS!!!

Otherwise, play some Pavement! The Diamond Sea (edit, I guess)! Arcade Fire (they would be so much fun to dance to, admit it!)!

Vintage Motown and Stax. I went to a wedding last weekend and that was the music that was playing for the first half hour. I haven't boogied so much in ages. Sadly the DJ then switched to playing Kaiser Chiefs and Arctic Monkeys for the rest of the evening so that the students could jump around drunkenly with their arms around each others' shoulders, and it ruined the whole vibe. Don't play that kind of shit, please, it has no class.

The one thing I like about djing weddings is having an excuse to play old romantic lounge and torch songs while the old folks are still around. That stuff crosses the generations better than most other material too.

When my wife and were married we ended the ceremony with "Dream Come True" by Sun Ra (a rare male vocal number from Sound Sun Pleasure). It was perfect, and it got Sun Ra into our wedding without giving any of the grandparents heart attacks.

If one must play pop music from the '80s (and I made a healthy living doing it for years, so I won't dis anyone who takes the money) always lean more towards the Cure than Prince. The things people do on the dance floor will be much less gruesome to watch, and the likelihood of the dj scoring with a gorgeous though undoubtedly neurotic flower girl will be greatly increased.

I'm getting married soon, and I think I'll just make a huge mix of stuff. If I were to DJ someone else's wedding, I think I would have to include "Friends of Mine" by the Zombies. I think "Silly Love Songs" by Paul McCartney would be a great pick as well.

He's into some crap music sometimes, but he pretends to like some good stuff when he is around me, and I think it's actually starting to take. Anyway, I was able to meet him half way. There is some Bloc Party, Interpol, Pixies, BRMC, etc. I mean, it is a wedding, ooioo or black dice just wouldn't really work.

But thanks for all the suggestions, I can't believe I didn't even think of Michael Jackson. Sometimes doing to music for a wedding can be a blast, and sometimes it just sucks. Like I helped RdTv get the music together for his wedding, and we just had a bunch of old funk, some great rap instrumentals, some oldies, and just all around good music. This one is different though, cause most of the people are from Virginia Beach, and the all think they are living in "The OC," and they fit the mold perfectly.

Haha, I don't disagree, but this dude just wouldn't go for it. Although I am gonna try to work in some of your other suggestions, I could probably get some of those in there.

Could you give me some song titles to find by some of these bands? I'm already planning on using at least one song by about a third of those bands. For example, I'm thinking of using "When You Sleep" by My Bloody Valentine, because it was on the mix that I gave Carley (my fiancee) when we first started dating.
