Not all Morrissey solo stuff is bad, Vauxhall & I is great (but I'll grant you that none of his other records are any near as good).

Love the Smiths. Can't help it. I think it's mostly Johnny Marr that does it for me. That guy has a language all his own on the guitar. He's truely a unique player.

yes, for me its not simply the content of the lyrics, but the delivery. for me, the lyrics have a content which truly reflects my feelings/thoughts/experiences and I have an affinity with the sound/style of the singing.I imagine this is why folks like the Smiths or sonic youth or blink 182 or any band of any genre for that matter..

its all a matter of taste isn't it?

Chino says that morissey is his biggest influence, and it is on all his playlists for years and years now, clearly he digs em. where as deftones are one of my biggest influences and are on my constant playlists but I can't stand morissey.. its textbook irony i say.. like preferring british blues to chicago style you know?

Greatest lyricist ever? Mark E. Smith, Don Van Vliet..

Don't give a shit about Moz's lyrics.

well put. i honestly find that smiths songs (more often than not) are in good humor. even the depressing stuff like suffer little children, please please please let me get what i want, asleep, etc. are EXTREMELY well-written tunes and don't come across as the slightest bit whiney to me.

i think i might have said it before on here, but people need to stop taking the mozzer so seriously.

i agree. for such a supposedly miserable band The smiths created some of the most hilarious music I've heard. I remember trying to stop myself from laughing out loud while listening to 'Rusholme Ruffians' on my walkman on the bus when i was a kid - a problem I never had while listenig to, say, Joy Division. The Smiths were 'miserable' in the same way a Mike Leigh film or an Alan Bennet play might also be considered miserable.

So I got the Louder Than Bombs comp and I love it.I kept repeating songs so much it took hours to finish the first listen. I kinda feel like this band is the british rem except they're a little more punk and can be a little sadder. Morissey can really write some good lyrics though while they can occasionoally be cringeworthy and that Marr has really inspired me on the guitar.Learned to play Sheila take a bow as soon as i got home yesterday.

So what would you guys reccomend next?

Look out with strangeways, it has a weird a bit plastic production. Some people hate the album for that, some love it for that.

Yes, Strangeways is great! I like em all, but that one seems to be underrated a nut. While they all sound great, that one may sound the best, purely sound wise.

I've never been particularly into Strangeways - although I do think the track 'Paint a Vulgar Picture' boasts some of Marr's best playing. On the whole though i don't think it quite lives up to The Smiths' middle two studio LPs: Meat is Murder and The Queen is Dead. To me, Strangeways sounds like an album made by a band in the process of splitting up. It has a certain gloominess and self obsession (lots of references to the band itself within a number of songs - not least 'Stop Me If You think that You've Heard this One Before' and the aforementioned 'Paint a Vulgar Picture'). In that sense it's interesting in terms of the band's own history but lacks the broader appeal of their earlier albums. For me, the band's creative peak came with The Queen is Dead.
