What a day yesterday! Seems I left a small light on in my wife's Lexux overnight and the battery was a little dead in the morning. She was interviewing for a new job that morning, all dressed up, and had to ride to work with my son in his dirty car. So she was miffed, naturally.

I waited until my son got home about midday to see if I could jump start the Lexus from his car's battery. No deal. His battery's either too weak or the jumper cables were too thin.

So I spend the rest of the day trying to arrange for my roadside assistance crew to send someone out for a jump. Ha! First, they say they've got someone lined up who will be out in 15 minutes. 45 minutes go by, I get on the horn with this someone and learn he knows nothing about this, and no, he doesn't "service" my area.

I call roadside assistance back who arrange for someone new to come out. I get about 12 calls from this new person who can't find my place. Our subdivision is so new it's not on Google, can't be GPS'd, etc. What's worse, the main drag that leads to our subdivision isn't marked with a street sign, and there's no real landmark of any significance nearby, so directing people who don't know the area is a bitch and a half.

Finally, they make it out, and the car starts pronto. Now it's time to go get the wife. I decide as a "fun surprise" to bring the two dogs (our Goldens). Mistake. I receive a lecture about the dogs smelling up "her" car, filling it with dog hair, now there will be dog hair when she goes to work every morning, she hates sharing a car with me, why can't I think of her needs.

This comes on the tail of a romantic getaway weekend in the mountains, by the way.

Oh, and I'm late supposedly. She said 7 or a quarter to 7, so what am I doing there at 7.10. I'm confused. The cell phone says 7, the car clock says 7. "Yes, but if I started out saying quarter to 7 and changed it to 7, then you should have known I meant be there BEFORE 7."

Uh, okay.

This leads to further ranting about why can't I be thoughtful like some husbands who clean and maintain their wives' cars weekly, and she even knows somebody who drives up every weekend 300 miles just to take care of his wife's car. This leads to what am I getting done around the house since I work at home. Oh, dear, I'm screwed.

She's still mad.

I can't figure out if this is a Larry David episode or something out of some acid-addled version of Alice in Wonderland.

Today was mellow though. A lot of Radiohead on the stereo. A lot of good work getting done.

What will tomorrow bring?

Aren't you glad I shared?

Ugh. Yeah. Though my sister-in-law actually tells us she now goes and plays bingo.

Never, not me, no way.

Apparently. I'm a terrible husband.

It points out to me how the innocuous details can grow into mountains of torment. If I'd remembered to turn off that damn little light in the car, none of this would have happened. My wife would be happy, and still thinking of me as a thoughtful husband.
