Long time viewer, first time poster. I'm making the about 4 hour drive from KC to Arkansas for the show. Hopefully more shows coming this summer. This will be my 11th show (although half were during the Rather Ripped tour). Wondering if any sonic youth freaks are going, maybe try and hook up if possible. Post and we will try and get in touch! John

I'll be there. I've seen them several times but never this close to home. I live in Arkansas. Me and my wife and maybe a couple of friends are going. Are they playing a regular set? I don't care about seeing any of the other bands so I'm not sure how early we will get there.

You should care about the so called, "opening bands". Leslie Keffer is opening the show in Nashville, so I'm assuming the same goes for the Arkansas show. & if so you'll want to catch her set.

Yeah that would be cool but here it's Little Feat and Spearhead. The Dickson Street Music Festival. Friday night is a bunch of country bands. Me and John may be the only ones there after the noise starts

Very cool. Hey, did you go to the Tulsa show in 2006? I met some people from Arkansas there. Thought it might me you. Anyhow, my cell # is (816) 352-1263. text or call sometime sat when you get too the venue or whatever. I'm leaving KC about noon, get into town around 4 or so. I'm sure the opening bands will bring out a pretty "red" audience, if you know what I mean, but hopefully it will be a good set, not too many songs off rather ripped (although pink steam live is incredible) Hope to hook up with your gang on saturday! John

Unfortunately, I'll be unable to attend. I'm lucky as it is to even go see the Nashville performance. From what I hear, I'll be missing out on a great show. First time SY plays Arkansas, & also a unique venue. I'm sure this is a given but, have fun.

It wasn't me in Tulsa. I haven't seen them live since the Washing Machine tour in Memphis and opening for REM in KC when Jet Set was out. I'm still not sure when we will get there Saturday. They aren't playing until 9:30. We may meet some friends from Little Rock who may be coming up also. Should be fun...

Here is a link to some pictures we took last night. It was an amazing show, lots of energy. I was in front of Lee and got to touch his guitar during Mote. The only bad thing was they were running late and didn't get to play Teenage Riot (I got a setlist)

It was so great. Wish they would've played "Teenage Riot" but it was still a set that couldn't get much better.

i posted a review of the show and some pictures on my blog yesterday. Check it out here if you'd like:

Great site Dustin. You are so right on Spearhead. They were talented but after 10 minutes you pretty much heard all you needed to hear...

Maybe I'm old and jaded, but I was a bit disappointed w/ the Arkansas show. Granted, I'm not a fan of the new album much. Unlike other albums of theirs where I was initially disappointed (it happens w/ this band, I know), this one has just never grown on me. I saw them do this material 2 years ago and I still have the same feelings of apathy towards the new music overall. And I LOVED their previous 2 albums, so maybe that has alot to do w/ my reaction to the show. There are some great tunes on RIPPED, and generally they played the best ones on the album...but none of these songs have that "epic" quality that is the Sonic signature to me, and frankly they are kind of boring live, with too many of them dragging down the set overall.

Also, being that the set clocked in at about 1 hour and 5 minutes w/ encore, it was without a doubt the shortest Sonic set I've ever seen (this was my 4th time seeing them). I'm sure another 15 or 20 minutes of older, more explosive material would have left me with a more pleasant taste in my mouth. And this was not their fault at all, as the festival coordinators just did not allow them enough time for a proper setup/soundcheck. Even Thurston commented after the first song that things sounded rather strange on stage. It seemed like it took them a while to get the sound dialed in, then poof: they were saying good night. Anyone else notice Kim get shocked on the mic during BULL in the Heather? She seemed pretty pissed....surprised no one else has commented on the technical difficulties.

Anyways, it's always great to see Sonic Youth of course - I've been a fan for over 15 years. I just still think they have not found their way after Jim leaving...it seems that Ibold is just there to let Kim sing w/o the hinderance of an instrument when need be, but besides that I don't understand what he's doing up there. It seems kind of redundant when she DOES pick up the bass because the majority of the time her and Ibold are playing the exact same thing (unlike early tortoise usage of 2 basses for instance).

I'm sure that Sonic Youth have another great album in them, but I sincerely miss Jim O'Rourke for the extra energy and extra layers of sonic mayhem that he brought to their overall live sound. The Murray St. and Sonic Nurse tours were amazing...

So here's to the Sonic Future, and a hope that one day these guys can blow my mind again in a live setting. If not, no harm/no foul - they've given us nearly 30 years of consistently good music - and they are all getting old. I don't wanna steal steam from anyone who enjoyed the show, or argue over how I must've missed something. Just wanted to voice my opinion because as of late it seems like blasphemy to criticize this band in any way. I am a true fan and always will be...

my 2 cents

There were a few technical difficulties early in the set. I saw Kim glaring at the soundman but I didn't realize she got shocked. It was still a great show IMO. One of the main reasons was not having to drive 4-6 hours to see them, but I thought they played with a lot more energy than the 2 times I had seen them before...

It was my first time to get to see them so I was just glad to be seeing them(and not driving 5-6 hours to see it). I agree the set could've been better, but I do like Rather Ripped for the most part. If not for "Incinerate" and "Pink Steam" alone. I will also somewhat agree about Ibold, as I also noticed he and Kim were playing the same thing when they did play together. but yeah, still an awesome show in my book.
