o yeah, Tremolo and Glider. The song Glider sounds like the hook of Only Shallow repeated over and over. Swallow from Tremolo is basically To Here Knows When with beats and some Middle Eastern touches (I prefer BB's performance on Swallow though). Clearly Bilinda should have sang on every song, except for maybe Sometimes. And if only the last song from Tremolo was sung by BB...

i heard somewhere that most of the vocals on loveless are by kevin, even some that you'd think would be bilinda as his vocals where speeded up... but whatever.

Right now I'm listening to IA. My mini boom box is chillin' inside of my 15" high trunk. The bass button's been pushed, and the volume's as high as I can take it. The trunk's top is nearrrrly closed (a bundled sock's keeping it open just a little bit) So much of Colm's drumming and Deb's bass-playing is pumping through this thing. Deb I hear you more! She's definitely the unheraled star of this one, for sure.

Pork, my opinion has been changed.

Good.My never so humble opinion might be a piss of shit but 'Isn't Anything' slurs like no other record i've ever heard.I still think they get way too much adulation as a band considering the limited and frankly not so peerless setting their music flourished.Don't let my memory or record collection agree on lashing out or there will be (harmless) internet trouble.

The band responsible for making their guitars sound like they were giving off a depressed sigh. That was a good enough reason for me to regard them as shit.

It simply wouldn't do to go on some tirade about the brilliance and influence of MBV here. My id wants to do it, but my rational brain says no.

To answer your question...

I don't know and neither does anybody else.

Only you can know if you've been missing out, and you can only find that out by giving the band's discog a good hearty listen. If you find something you like in there; something that, had you not heard it, you believe your life would have been somehow incomplete, then yes, you were missing out. If you don't dig it, fair enough, and then obviously the answer becomes no, you were not missing out, and you just wasted several hours listening to music you don't like.

In all honesty I don't really understand the question. It seems like you've heard them and not really gotten the bug, and you're wondering if that somehow isn't "right", but if you've heard them and don't like them, then honestly, what the fuck is there to gain in changing your opinion to conform to the status quo formed by aging ex-punks on an internet message board?

If the question was "I've never heard MBV... am I missing out?" then i would understand a bit better. But it sounds to me like you have heard people talking about their biblical awesomeness (something that's become a bit of a thoughtless habit among indie rock fans), and you're experiencing some in-group jealousy. Wishing you liked them so you could say things like that.

I do not believe in forcing yourself to like or hate music just so you can feel a sense of belonging to a particular social group.

Believe me, it's totally OK to not like My Bloody Valentine. I'm a fan- always have been- but I can admit that there was a bit of crap mixed in with the overall goodness of their output.

So, in short, you're only missing out on something if you like them and haven't heard enough of their music to realize that. If you don't like them, or remain ambivalent, you might be "missing out" on some conversations about My Bloody Valentine, and that's about it. So there's one answer to all of this: LISTEN TO THEM. It should be a pretty easy thing to figure out after that.

Personally, I think Loveless is a great achievement in recording. However, it is not the holy bible of indie rock that many people think it to be. It is a great album if you like that kind of music. In fact, it's THE album if you like that kind of music. But, although it is a milemarker in college rock/noise pop/shoegaze, it is not the best MBV album.

My bloody valentine is absolutely an acquired taste, but I think there are a lot of people who say they like them, when they actually don't. Don't ask me why, it's just a theory I've developed over the years. Personally, I love the album, but I'm more into their earlier career (see EP's named in this thread, Isn't Anything, etc.) I also listen to them from a musician's perspective. I spent countless teenage hours sitting with my first Jaguar and a cheap Peavey Envoy 110, playing Loveless on repeat and trying to recreate the sounds while playing along with the album. But it's vastly different than the band that MBV started out as, and many years later, I've pretty much decided that I prefer the Jesus and Mary Chain, and that Loveless owes more to Psychocandy than many people realize.

MBV is one of those bands that will always be a favorite of mine, but that I only listen to once or twice a year. Kind of like Husker Du, the Stone Roses, Pixies, and even Nirvana. The bands that first turned me into the shameless college rock junkie I am today.

Ooooh, so wise!

Actually, really a pretty good response to a difficult question.

Listen to MBV!!! Listen to them an *don't* read about them. Trust your ears, not the sycophantic praise of music journalists who weren't even born when Loveless came out. But just on the chance that you might be missing out, you should give them a thorough listen.
