Fuck yeah! Schnittke is fucking incredible. INCREDIBLE. Apart from Nagasaki, pretty much everything I've heard of is his is amazing. Yes! And you can't go wrong with Kremer either (even if he does play Bach like he's got a rocket up his arse).

Ah! That's really annoying, because that looks great, but it also looks like there's loads of crossovers with this, which I already have. You can't go wrong with Ligeti though (apart from his pretty slack forays into electronic music on disc 5 of the one I've got, and his statist stuff).

Someone got me this as a late Christmas present, but haven't had a chance to listen to it yet:

Try St Florian (2nd symphony). Requiem is perhaps a bit straighter than a lot of his stuff - Florian has the choral element, but a lot more recognisably 'Schnittke' things in it as well.

come on all ye who know about classical because I am such a beginner it hurts. I've been really enjoying Messian's Fette des belles eaux lately. & lots & lots of Debussy. Debussy wasn't really mentioned in this thread. What is everyone's thoughts on this man? |

I think that lutoslawski's string quartets are good.
and schubert is amazing. i assume that you are familiar with his Wintereisse. if not i highly recomend it. the now late D.F. Diskau sang it wonderfully. i had always somewhat avoided Schubert's symphonies for some reason and only listened to his lieder and quartets. but his 9th just blew me away recently and i have been listening to it quite frequently.

I have Wintereisse - may even have been the first thing of his I got. Never really gelled with me for some reason. I have a bit of a blind spot with lieder. Mahler's lieder is about the only one I ever got to grips with. I should change this, right?
