So I just found out this evening I'm going to Mexico City in July!

Have any of you ever been there/live there? What are some things to check out? I know next to nothing about it the city...

Well, I don't know the details of the trip, other than the date I'll be there. But I don't know, things that maybe tourists don't know about, record stores worth checking out. The exact location of Leon Trotskys house, you know shit like that.

I'll be with Spanish speakers, so this is a plus.

record stores, there are not many, they are pretty none exitant actually, but if you like prograssive rock and classic rock shit i can point you to some places.

a place to check out, if only for the amusement of witnessing is "el tianguis del chopo" which is a flea market that's all rock related stuff...not much obscure stuff but if you want to score some mexican edition vinyls by relatively well known bands or t-shirts or punk bootlegs or hard to find movies from all around the world and maybe even hear a local band play there, you should definitely go. it's also a sight the people who go there. the place only sets up on saturdays though.

you should definitely go to the historical downtown, it's pretty cool to walk around and stuff. go during the daytime, though.

there's a ton of cool museums, i'll look for a place online where you can locate all that stuff. and yeah, i've been to leon trotsky's house, that's in coyoacan, a beautiful place.

downtown is like the obligatory turist thing to do (besides going to the pyramids of teotihuacan), there's other places...i'm not really sure what else is "turistic" around here besides that, the museums and the chapultepec park (beautiful place too to walk around).

Flea markets kick!

I thought they built a church on top of the pyramids of teotihuacan or is that a different Aztec city?

the flea market, tiaguis cultural del chopo is on Aldama street, between the streets of Sol of Luna, Colonia Guerrero; besides Ferrocarriles de México (that's spanish for "mexican railroads"). you can go by metro to guerrero station and it's right outside of it. you'll need some more directions depending where you are going from, though.

the pyramids are like half an hour outside the city itself and those are intact (well, a little worn from erosion and age). what you are talking about is the metropolitan cathedral, which is located right in the middle of the historic downtown, on the zocalo. that cathedral was built on top of the major temple of the aztecs. there are actually historic ruin sightings right besides the temple and you can watch that stuff.
