...Despite Saturday being a wet day of start-stop rain up at the Naeba festival grounds, the fest had some excellent live excursions with a blinding set by Sonic Youth (reunited with Tokyo-based Jim O’Rourke) shading some equally noteworthy slots from Fields, Jenny Lewis and 1960s J-pop legends The Kingtones.

But there was only one band with red-hot value on the cards and it wasn’t hard to spot its enthusiastic members at the fest. RHCP was a prominent name on the Fuji Rock banners, but just like festival regulars, these sun-soaked Californians haven’t forgotten how to be rabid rock fans, too. Along with frontman Anthony Kiedis, you could spot guitarist John Frusciante and bassist Flea at the side of the smaller stages; going crazy during the Yeah Yeah Yeahs set while the entire band stood in awe at the Thurston Moore-led noise attack during Sonic Youth’s blitz...
