I definitely wasn't suggesting that your liking for Death Proof stemmed from being 'impressed' by its references, but then nor do I think it's a desire (on my part, at least) for him to make something 'serious' in the horror genre - I'm not convinced he'll ever make a particularly 'good' horror movie, never mind a serious one (and I'll always value 'good' over 'serious', anyway). I just think he has a natural feel for the crime genre which I never see when he tackles other ones. You'll obviously disagree with me here but I just think he's a better director than films like Death Proof suggest. There aren't that many really talented directors in Hollywood right now, so it's a shame to see one who is punching so far below his weight.
