Only songs I've heard by The Clash in my entire life are: White Riot, Rock The Casbah, London Calling, Guns of Brixton. I always thought of them as an angry pop band.. not really punk.
I also agree about the punk and politics bit. Rarely does music that is political from the get-go turn out to be something worthwhile as MUSIC. This is why I still can't get behind Bikini Kill. Yet I really like Huggy Bear. Anyway, here is an example of shitty political music, a thoroughly uninspired commentary on white privilege:
