Given my last road trip experience, I'm not sure I'm in the right frame of mind to imagine an ideal one.

Four of us drove from Chicago to Yosemite in California, and it wasn't as glamorous as we thought it'd be. For the experience, and to conserve cash, we camped along the way. I was with three guys, and I discovered that they simply did not put a high priority on personal hygiene. When the campsite showers were a bit dodgy, they simply wouldn't shower at all. I can't STAND the feeling of going without a shower, so I made a point of finding a way to bathe as consistently as possible.

Boys, in case you were wondering - yes, sometimes, you do smell.

Put three unbathed guys in a Volvo in August for 8 hours at a time - not pretty, I assure you.

A number of other things went wrong, too many to list (among them having the alternator on the car go out in some shitsplat town in Wyoming, having to entrust its repair to a guy named Burp, who had an outhouse and a pet chicken). It was worth it overall, we saw some amazing sights, but still, one must keep in mind...

not all road trips are of the Britney Spears ilk.
