Have you seen Zachariah? That's fairly out there. Also, Johnny Guitar is a definite must see for anyone who don't usually like Hollywood Westerns. It feels like a kind of Fellini/Bava/Fassbinder/Sirk take on the genre.

Personally I don't think Hollywood ever got any better than with its classic westerns. The Searchers, Stagecoach, Winchester '73, My Darling Clementine, High Noon, Shane, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence, some of the greatest art America has produced, never mind movies.
