Thats why the Fathers of the Church discovered they aren't real, but manipulations of the mind. They feel very real, but there is something existentially and integrally part of the inner self that is beyond our emotions, they called this the heart or soul. The heart is the real self, the mind is simply another organ the heart uses to translate the real self through the biological self. Emotions are the currency of the mind and have their proper function but are not to be trusted as like any organ from time to time the mind doesn't quite work properly. This is why its important to be in connection with one's real self to be able to surf the emotional waves rather than be overwhelmed by them.
