Attempt at clarification: Aranofsky's stuff falls more on the side side of banal, soap-opera-ish melodrama. Pretty conventional, predictable, laughable, and boring. As opposed to say the (melo)drama in a Herzog flick, which is much more surprising, thoughtful, and....................see...its harder to put a description on this sort of, for lack of a better word, higher melodrama. I tried.
