Metal always seems like one of those genres that, no matter how many records I own, I'll always feel like a fraud. Much like hardcore (punk, not happy). I don't think an appreciation of hardcore means anything unless you're down the front getting yourself hurt for a band that no-one will ever write about. Similarly, metal's all about the culture that surrounds it. No matter how much I love Maiden (or whatever), I'll always feel like I'm just a voyeur on metal culture, because ultimately I think long goatees are shit, hoodies look terrible and nice haircuts and shirts are a good idea. Also, while being able to play the guitar well is impressive, it really doesn't make anyone a decent human being.
