Think of this...the movie not only confronts the audience by its title character being deformed; there's also the scene where Mr. Merrick is caught masturbating by the nurse. Several other scenes also highlight the basic creatureliness of human nature, and several, in turn, show the nobility and long-suffering of human character as testimony to the power of the will. If that's not cimema designed to engage & challenge the viewer, then, I'm sorry, I don't know what is.

Cameron Crowe tried to utilize some of these elements & spice it up with some action & some stars with Vanilla Sky. It's an okay movie, but of course that one is a train wreck compared to the artistic qualities of David Lynch's The Elephant Man.

The movie (& play) ??? reportedly
made Michael Jackson want to buy Merrick's remains.
