Groups Unite to Bring Pro-Obama Art to Convention
DENVER—Artist
Shepard Fairey, the political action group
MoveOn.org, and the San Francisco–based gallery/apparel line
Upper Playground have joined forces to host the
Manifest Hope Art Gallery at the
Democratic National Convention from August 24 to 28.
Among the artists featured in the gallery, which will show artworks supporting
Barack Obama for president in 10,000 square feet of gallery space in downtown Denver, will be Fairey,
Sam Flores,
Ron English,
Chris Pastras,
Mel Kadel, and
David Choe.
The groups have also announced a related contest calling for artworks from Obama supporters. The submissions will be reviewed by a panel including artists
Ross Bleckner,
April Gornick,
Eric Fischl, and Fairey; musicians
Moby,
Thurston Moore, and
DJ Spooky; and curators
Cydney Payton of the
Museum of Modern Art Denver and
Nancy Spector of the
Guggenheim. Five finalists will be invited to show their work in Manifest Hope Art Gallery, and the top 30 submissions will be presented in an online gallery and will be available for sale. The funds will go to MoveOn.
"Our members have used creativity really effectively to help in elections, and we're excited to partner with Shepard and his crew to bring more artistic voices to help elect Obama," said
Eli Pariser, executive director of MoveOn. "The contest, the gallery, and the event will add energy to an already vibrant movement for progressive change in our country."
