I think The Clash had stodgy politics (well Strummer, anyway) and I'm not a fan of the production on their first album, but I wouldn't say they were musically stodgy at all. Very tight, very direct. The opposite of stodgy in my book. Saying that, my favourite album of theirs, Sandanista, could reasonably be described as being a bit stodgy, but only in the same way that, say, Prince's Sign o' the Times might be described as such.
