most modern shoegaze bands are variations of the mbv or slowdive sound
the real cool stuff though imho are the bands which incorporate those dreamy soundscapes into heavier music, creating 'blackgaze' and 'post-metal'
it's something very recent that's happened in the music scene, starting w/ bands like Deftones, Isis, Russian Circles, Alcest, Deafheaven,Bosse-de-Nage, etc.
