Sure, but not to the degree of something like SY, or Beefheart. VU definitely added some dissonance and blackness to their songs, but really, stripped-down -- and especially on later records -- they were pop songs. Drugged-out, hazey, simple, ugly, and boring pop songs. Obviously, not EVERY song is like that, like Sister Ray, but even that kinda stuff was sorta in tune with what was going on at the time. In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida anyone? (I'm just kidding, but only slightly)...
