Dinner is a proper meal, tea is a light one, taken anytime from approximately 5pm - 7pm (the main meal of the day). Supper is partaken of late at night. It may be a snack, a small meal, or anything in between.
I rather sense that cultural differences are at work here.
Soup for supper would be a ghastly faux pas; soup should only be enjoyed for lunch or as a starter at dinner. I'm rather partial to cream of asparagus, personally.
