For Sonic Youth fans who weren’t sated by the concert footage that screened at Nitehawk last year, the highlight will no doubt be “Sonic Youth: NYC & Beyond,” an Aug. 17 screening of NYC-specific material that’s described as “completely unseen, threaded together with a few items which are out there in the public knowledge but here presented from the best source available to the band.” A q&a with drummer Steve Shelley and archivist Aaron Mullan will follow.
Members of Sonic Youth also appear in Desolation Center, a documentary about the gonzo concerts in the Mojave Desert—a DIY precursor to Coachella— that director Stuart Swezey threw in the mid-’80s. Members of the Minutement, Meat Puppets, Swans and others also appear in the film.
