This Saturday, The Mohawk is hosting a benefit for
Girls Rock Austin and the
Girls Rock Camp Alliance, featuring oddly punctuated, mostly female rockers
Ume.,
Follow that Bird!,
Code Rainbow!, and the venerable
Pink Nasty.
Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls first started in Portland in 2001, and has since grown in size and scope. Our Austin affiliate, Girls Rock Camp Austin, began last year with the progressive aim of “building girls’ self-esteem through musical instruction and performance.” The camp is for 8-17 year-olds, beginners welcome, and lasts for two weeks in the summer. Rock Camp teachers this year include
Sarah Glynn,
Rosie Flores, and
Emily Marks.
The benefit begins early at 5 p.m., is family-friendly and open to minors, and a guitar signed by all of the members of
Sonic Youth will be raffled off at some point in the evening. The event pairs up and comers Code Rainbow! with the more established but no less scrappy and excitable Follow That Bird!, as well as Ume.’s trademark noise-core.
