Smith and The Cure have definitely been influenced by Sonic Youth over the years, as well. The Wish album (1992), in particular, appealed to me as bearing quite a few earmarks of Sonic Youth and avant-noise/grunge in general. Also, both groups over the years have been given to veering off into the dark realm of goth on various albums--e.g., Seventeen Seconds, Faith, Pornography, Confusion Is Sex, much of EVOL and A Thousand Leaves, Blood Flowers, etc.
