a pub serves food and often has a place for families, they serve as neighborhood institutions, many even serve breakfast (even here in Los Angeles!) where as a bar is a place for strictly low-lives and loose women to gather for mindless drinking..

each has its own place in life, I generally prefer the atmosphere of a pub to a bar, but there are a few bars I go to, though honestly the bars I frequent are very much like pubs except they don't got food.
