This analogy is wrong, a more correct analogy would be the burgler started shooting at the people while they were asleep, broke into the house, and then shot the residents who began defending themselves, but then the police arrested the residents and blame the situation on them; after all, the burgler was simply defending himself. Oh, and the US won't take a position on this.
