At one point, as they were on their way to becoming one of the biggest bands in the world (that "only band that matters" crap) some people really hated the Clash - singing about "Complete Control" while being on CBS was considered a completely unacceptable paradox. And the post-punkers hated the Clash for reverting to classic styles while they were pushing things forward musically like it hadn't been done since the '60s.
Me, I love the self-titled debut (UK VERSION, PLEASE; the US edition is [was? is it still in print?] an unrecognizable Frankenstein) and London Calling.
