I like the semicolon - it's suggestive, allusive, a sultry promise of verbal delicacies.
But perhaps periods don't receive their proper due. They're decisive, definitive, the embodiment of syntactical authority. The semicolon is the pair of handcuffs in language's orgasmic frenzy; the period, however, is the almighty whip.
Edit: "syntactical" - I may have made that word up. I'm real tired like.
