New Order were creative guys with a whole lot of funding to mess around, but that only makes them in league with the Chemical Brothers or some other hit and miss alternative pop laboratory with some amount of finger on the current.

Joy Division were one of the most important first generation post-punk bands, and ironically had infinitely more pop sense as an underbelly! That some of the same guys went on to make less edgy and simultaneously less relevant dance mix experiments... Ian obviously wasn't sticking around for that.
