anyway there's tons more about the benefits of smaller homes without going to extremes. so yeah, less stuff = less real estate cost.

when you consider that you have to pay rent or mortgage to 'house" your stuff... you realize you don't own it, it owns you. and yeah since paying mortgage is not a great investment (see link #1) don't count that the extra expense will return to you some day.
