Horse Woman (Part One):

Horse Woman

These fascinating women are rarely classically beautiful but Horses of the fair sex always boast a certain physical something which sets them apart from their sisters. The Horse lady's special gift is a natural self-assurance and social accessibility which can be much more fetching than the cold-featured good looks of your standard Playboy centerfold. She is not mysterious or charismatic. Rather, the female Horse has the unmistakeable sureness of the thoroughbred filly. She instinctively knows how to carry her head high as she walks elegantly through a room. She often distinguishes herself by a marked flamboyance in dress and manner. She is an arresting creature who rarely accepts to be overlooked. Her behaviour is sometimes over-emphatic and she may even be accused of insolence. But the Horse woman's outrageousness is not an attention-seeking device: eccentricity is her way of way of establishing herself as unusual, exceptional and independent of what she considers stultifying conversation.

The Horse woman is incapable of concealing the state of her soul. Her face is expressive and even when she tries to hide her feelings they tend to seep out of the sides of her darkened countenance. She can become melancholy under stress and has a reputation in China for being unstable, nervous and excitable.

Her eyes are usually clear, lively and mobile with a provocative twinkle. She has a frank stare which she often accompanies with a knowing grin, using the redoubtable combination to tame adversaries, convince clients or even persuade a political constituency. The Horse woman's mouth is large with full lips which grow thinner as she ages. Her teeth are long and very white, her smile winning and her voice mellifluous, resonant and cheerful.

You may be able to recognise the Horse woman in your own entourage by their straight, wiry build. They carry themselves bolt upright and often have broad shoulders and a short torso with longish arms and thighs. Her build is not exactly what we think of today as feminine, as she is neither delicate nor voluptuous. Yet Horse women have an active, lusty sex life and are attractive to men.

Love, for the Horse woman, is rarely peaceful. There is something tormented about her approach to love which robs her of the pure joy of letting herself go. The Chinese say that she is more attracted to the erotic aspects of sex than the emotional. The way she often insists on odd or novel positions and is attracted to arcanely adventurous escapades such as making love in an airplane lavatory remind one of the classical male approach to sex which, by virtue of its emphasis on technique, is often accused of lacking romance and warmth.

In her secret heart, the Horse woman longs for a Prince Charming who will whisk her off to some mythical sex dreamland whence she will never have to return to punch a time-clock. In reality she is often attracted to weak-willed, ethereal men whom she can handle and even squash. She likes to feel stronger than her mate but feels she can help him to be happier in her company and care.

She is usually faithful in marriage but sometimes, because of a difficult chapter in her relationship or a nagging sense of inadequacy in sex and love, she will throw herself indiscriminately into one or even a few mad affairs. Not everyone feels as profoundly as Ms Horse about marriage and family and she may find herself in the arms of philanderers before she realises that men of easy virtue couldn't care less about her. Sadly, because she is so essentially serious about sex, these hastily terminated marital asides often cause her great sadness and may only increase her sense of failure. She should be careful not to leap before she takes a good look over the precipice of any apparently irresistible aventure sexuelle.

In intimate situations this woman is frequently thought to be cold or stand-offish. The properly-stimulated Horse woman, however, will prove a sensual, gentle and even submissive lover and will know how to please even the most complicated partner. But she needs an understanding lover. She is skittish about being touched or intruded upon and must be cajoled or carressed skilfully before becoming aroused. Once a lover has learned the secrets of this woman's complex sexuality, she can be his for ever as she is not one to flit about looking for cheap thrills.

The Horse woman is usually ebullient and vital. She exudes energy and enthusiasm for all that is new and exotic, for adventure and fun. Mostly we perceive her as self-confident, at ease and glad to be alive. She is always on the move, restless and raring to get up and go - sometimes she grows neurotic and paranoid because she cannot find enough to do.

Idleness is her enemy. Even bedridden, the Horse woman stays busy. The idea of sitting in a room without doing something causes the horse unbearable moral pain.

Concerned first with the material in life, the Horse woman is rarely preoccupied with spirituality. Religion only interests her for its social value. She feels that the church is a good place for the family to go once a week or a convenient outlet for her energy, perhaps volunteering to arrange the flowers or to organize Sunday school picnics. The Horse woman does not seek to penetrate far beyond the surface: she likes to deal in the concrete. She may be said to lack subtlety in her approach to life but this is the "deficiency" which serves her practical needs so perfectly. Horse women are not solely interested in gain, ownership and wealth, but they would prefer to be comfortably secure than entrust their survival to chance, God, or even the goodwill of another human being. They invariably choose the solid-citizen tangible long-term solution over the temporal pleaures of any fly-by-night scheme or the thrill of a fleeting moment of joy.

Once the Horse woman has made up her mind, she sticks with it. She's a rugged individual, a self-starter and finisher. She has unusual strength and a strong, almost virile character, knowing exactly what she wants out of a given situation and going after it in her own inimitable fashion. Beyond the normal courage of meeting everyday life head-on, the Horse woman is capable of unflinching confidence in the face of impossible odds. She is frequently over-optimistic and may even think she can do more than is humanly possible.

When Autumn was small she used to tell me not to worry about being poor because she was going to win a sewing contest where the prize for the best-designed dress was a million dollars. "And I'll give all the money to you, Mom".
"But honey," I had to tell her, "you don't know how to sew!"
"I'll learn," she said gaily.
And she did learn. She didn't win the nationwide contest, and was sharply disappointed, but she so believed in her own talent that she did not let a detail like not knowing how to sew stand in her way.

Autumn's optimism was not entirely unfounded: female Horses are gifted in crafts, arts and skills involving the hands and the head. It's not unusual for a Horse wife and mother to make all her family's clothes, preserve vegetables from her garden, entertain in high style, decorate her home intricately and find time to be a lawyer or a doctor.

Like her male counterpart, the female Horse has impressive intellectual capacities and can choose almost any profession where she will be challenged and guaranteed to keep busy. She also needs freedom and cannot be confined to a small office, or a tiny desk in a typing pool. She takes up a lot of social room and will always set herself apart by exhibiting her desire to take charge and organise the time and efficiency of others. She has little patience for waiting out long-term goals and prefers immediate satisfaction. She loves excitement, challenge and risk. She's addicted to novelty and prefers surprises to predictability, in her work as well as her colleagues.
