Interestingly I always felt differently, I wouldn't exactly call it bitter. True, there some glaring criticism, but in truth there is also a fairly obvious spiritual theme across a lot of Sonic Youth's music for many years, as attested by many tunes on this thread. I mean really, are there any outwardly negative songs about faith? I can't recall anything as similar as Subhumans, "No I don't believe in Jesus Christ, my mother died of cancer when I was five.."

Well bitter was the wrong word. I had a similar childhood actually, in terms of religion, and I'm not bitter. I'm actually quite sentimental about my religious upbringing, which lasted until my mid teens (when I started listening to... Well, guess who?). I don't think he's bitter.. But I think it's left a permenent impression on him.

Also, I don't think that line in Rapture is necessarily Thurston being openly religious. I think it's more poetic than anything else. He's definitely talking about religious thought, but I don't think he's exactly singing the praises of Christianity. Could be wrong though.
