ok, this may sound bizarro, but rather than quitting, you could rat the fucker out to the big bosses.

what you do is you sit down with everyone who is pissed off at him, write a nice professional letter reporting of the fucker's incompetence, and send it up the chain of command.

what do you risk? probably nothing. you could be fired, but if you're ready to quit, why the fuck not.

the upside of this is that you could get the fucker transferred elsewhere and you'd be happy with your workmates again.

if you had a prior boss who was decent and the current suck is hurting morale, you DEFINITELY have a case.

and make sure the guy who was promoted and quit contributes to the report.
