this mostly likely is the case, i think i remember seeing a video in reference to what you are mentioning where the band is playing the outro to "Pattern Recognition" and Thurston did some total guitar abandenment as he was doing during the end of this song and then he dragged the guitar across the stage by pulling on the guitar cable, if you have a high quality "tight" jack in your guitar and the right guitar cable plug locking mechanism so this can be done.
