Rob pointed out that there was no media coverage until the police got involved. In the situation you're referring to, I don't believe the citizens of that community responded by gathering in mass at night, therefore requiring no police presence.
I heard Ted Nugent had published list of names of white people that have been killed by black people since Ferguson began and none of the names listed had received National media coverage......to be honest, they probably shouldn't.
